Xtreme Bean (Tempe, AZ)

They roast their own beans, which is impressive as long as their coffee still comes out tasting OK, which is does usually.

Here’s a roaster, don’t know if they actually use it though:

The most dependable blend they carry, in my opinion, is the Mexicana. Me and my wife go there just to get that.

The way they brew their coffee makes it come out really strong. That’s good for many people… i just happen to be at a stage in my life where i prefer lighter blends. I don’t want to be able to cut my coffee with a knife.

Interesting fact about Xtreme Bean: the building used to be a bank. See, here’s the vault door:
Their to-go cups have self-plugging lids.

They have this study room set apart for anyone who wants to reserve it. Just close the folding doors and you have your much needed solace.
One day out of the week, a piano man comes in. Anyone can play it on the night, but there’s one particular elderly fellow who comes in and plays Scott Joplin style music. He’s good.
The Xtreme Bean has become practically a Tempe landmark, as Tempe is a college town (ASU) and so many college students come here. It’s a place of free expression, art, social networking and tasteful hanging-out.
