Drastically Low Coffee Prices at Target — A Sign of the Times?

February 24th, 2009 · No Comments · Coffee News

Target has drastically reduced their selling price for a typical bag of Starbucks coffee:

These drastic price cuts are “signs of the times” I suspect.

Target is having such a hard time unloading their Starbucks inventory that they’ve knocked the price down to $7.04 for a regular back of whole beans.

This struck me, especially after hearing about Starbucks’ plans to release their own instant coffee, which is obviously a reaction to difficulties in the luxury coffee sector. Evidently people have changed their spending habits to the point that this major retailer’s average bag of coffee is now closer to $6.50, as compared to a year ago when (as I remember) an average bag of coffee was closer to $10.00.

Here’s something you don’t see everyday: one unit of Starbucks coffee for $7.04 versus one unit of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee for $7.49.

Tough times for Starbucks? I think yes.
