According to this article from Bloomberg.com, Ethiopia has assumed control over its own coffee trading interests. Those whom the country depends on to distribute Ethiopian coffee beans have been, according to government officials, hoarding this vital commodity with the expectation that the world-market price will increase again sometime soon.
While this might make sense for these exporters’ bottom line, it has been putting the Ethiopian people who depend on this valuable export in a world of hurt. Thus, the country has taken action to export coffee itself, apart from traditional avenues that have utilized up to this point.
Hopefully this new development will be to the benefit of average, working Ethiopians as well as average, working coffee drinkers around the world.
