Great Harvest Bread Co. (Tempe, AZ) — Oregon Chai

April 25th, 2009 · 7 Comments · Arizona

Great Harvest Bread Co. is located in Tempe, AZ on the Northwest corner of Warner and McClintock. In return for ordering an iced Oregon Chai I learned a lot about high quality bread.

For one thing, I had no idea such a high quality coffee and bread shop existed right here in Tempe, AZ. I would recommend stopping by to get a cup of joe, try some of their free samples and pick up a brochure or two about specialty, handmade bread.

As I mentioned earlier, I tried the iced chai and, for bread, a sample of the pumpkin chocolate chip bread. The name sold me at first, but it turns out the pumpkin flavor pairs pretty well with Oregon Chai.

Interesting facts about Great Harvest Bread Co:
– They grind their wheat using a real stone grinder.
– They have low-carb and gluten free bread.
– They use no preservatives, so they have to sell their bread immediately after baking it.
– Their famous Honey Whole Wheat has only five ingredients: stone ground whole wheat, honey, salt, yeast and water.

Below is their espresso bar. They have all the espresso based beverages you would expect to find at any coffee shop. Cave Creek Coffee Roasters is their coffee supplier. They also carry Maya loose leaf teas.

Sounds like a place worth trying when I’m in the area. I wonder if you’ve ever tried Lux coffee bar in Phoenix?

There is a Great Harvest Bakery right around the corner from my house here in Sacramento. Best store-bought bread, period.

Interestingly, ours doesn’t sell any beverages, and doesn’t double as a cafe. Curious.

It is a chain, actually, albeit one of the better ones. They even have a wikipedia page! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Harvest_Bread_Company
There are a couple stores in Oregon that my family loves to visit. Hard to pass up the free samples of freshly-baked bread and cookies!
