Is it ‘Expresso’ or ‘Espresso?’

Actually, it’s “espresso.”

But, if you don’t drink espresso/expresso based beverages very often then you might not care, and I wouldn’t blame you. I learned that it’s actually called “espresso” only after I had spent about $1,000 at Starbucks. Also, just so you know, “frappuccino” is not a real Italian word (though “Venti” actually is).

But don’t sweat it. For every aficionado there will be ten people with different tastes who either mispronounce the words related to that aficionado’s trade, or who don’t care either way.

For example, trucks with extra wheels in the back are “dualies,” not “doolies.” Trumpet players might easily pick up a “cornet” and play it, but not a “coronet.” Also, don’t be “disorientated” by reading this paragraph, instead try being “disoriented.”

One time I heard a guy say something about about his “erl,” which confused me. Then, later on, I figured out that he meant “U-R-L.”

But people should not judge those who are not up to speed with every language niche (“nich” or “neesh”?). For example, does it really matter if the general population keeps up with the ever-expanding new acronyms emerging from texting/instant messaging (L33t speak)?

All that to say, if you prefer to call espresso “expresso,” then I won’t judge. But if you start calling it “espresso,” I promise it will grow on you.
