According to this article by Reuters, knocking back a medium-sized dose of caffeine before a major workout may lessen post-workout muscle soreness. This notable alleviation is (supposedly) related to an attribute of caffeine which blocks a chemical called adenosine, which activates pain receptors in muscle tissue. This sounds similar to the effect that steroids have on bodybuilders.
The study administered caffeine directly — through pills — not by drinking the equivalent amount of coffee, which would have been 3-4 average sized mugs. I suspect that drinking coffee straight up would have caused some major acid reflux.
