Cryogenically Frozen Coffee by Dippin’ Dots

May 11th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Coffee News, Coffee Science

The company Dippin’ Dots, famous for making cryogenically frozen little ice cream beads (or dots) might apply the same technology to make “Coffee Dots.” I heard about this through this article in USA Today.

“Cryogenic” just means “having an extremely low temperature.” Such exteme temperatures are most commonly reached with the help of liquid nitrogen. Incidentally it is also possible to freeze robots made from liquid mercury using a similar method.

Dippin’ Dots are known for taking the “ice” out of “ice cream,” which is to say, they don’t have that annoying, crunchy-ice texture that you get from cheaper varieties of ice cream. I’m assuming they would make “Coffee Dots” out of either coffee ice cream or some kind of coffee and cream mixture, such as that which comes in Starbucks’ bottled Frappuccinos.

Anything ice-based tends to be popular here in Phoenix, at least — all you need is to set up shop near a movie theater or mall.

“Cryogenic.” Everytime I hear that word, I think of how people freeze themselves until the year 2275. LOL

Now, Cryogenically frozen coffee? That sounds like the beginning of something much bigger. If they go farther than that, then we will know there is a conspiracy somewhere….
