At one point in the movie Trapped, Dakota Fanning has an asthma attack, and we, the audience become afraid that, on top of being kidnapped, maybe this poor kid is going to suffocate. But she doesn’t. You know why? Because coffee (caffeine) saves her!
One of the side effects of caffeine is bronchial dilation, or the opening up of your wind passageways. This is why caffeine may offer temporary relief for people suffering from an asthma attack. This article, found in the NCBI health journal, seems to support the opinion that caffeine helps with asthma.
On the other hand, this article from Buzzle.com makes some good points about why caffeine might have an adverse effect on asthmatics since it produces stress, which in turn sets off asthma attacks.
On a related note, I have found that my throat seems to open up when caffeine is coursing through my system, which seems to increase the quality of my voice. At the same time, coffee dries out my throat/vocal chords, thus limiting my ability to speak at length.
As far as asthma goes, please consult your doctor — don’t make any prescription changes based on the casual references made in this post.
It’s interesting though, right?
