The consistency of your coffee grind matters a lot, it turns out.
Pictured below is a coffee that is too coarse for a drip filter, though it might have been about right right for a French press:

I was in a bit of a hurry this morning (as usual) and didn’t bother looking very closely at my coffee grounds until after I poured them into the filter. So I took the opportunity to photograph what “too coarse” looks like (what not to do). Sure enough, my coffee today was watery and unbalanced, without body or really any personality at all.
You can see how watery and transparent the brewed coffee ended up being (pictured below):

The flavor might was somewhat bitter as well, sort of like when you pour a cup after the pot has only brewed halfway.
