Kopi Luwak Coffee — Expensive Animal Feces

September 19th, 2009 · No Comments · Coffee, Rarities

Kopi  Luwak is the rarest, most expensive coffee in the world, selling for $100-$600 a pound.  It is expensive because it’s made from the feces of Palm Civets (also called Luaks or Luwaks), which are not very big, so they don’t produce enough poo poo for it to ever be sold at a bulk discount.

Here is “raw” Kopi Luwak (be sure to wash it a few extra times):

The dried out coffee excrement is eventually washed, roasted, packaged and sold to people looking for an exotic coffee experience:

Kopi Luwak is not a blend of coffee per se, since the Palm Civet might have eaten the coffee fruit off of a variety of different trees.   It is the digestive tract of the Palm Civet that gives the beans this particular flavor.  For obvious reasons (money) researchers have looked into ways to reproduce this process without having to pick through animal defecation.

I would not be able to tell you about the flavor of this particular coffee bean, and I probably won’t be able to any time soon for at least two reasons.  In any case, this must be the most memorable type coffee I’ve ever heard of.
